AUTOBIOLOGY
Lillian’s body doesn’t have good boundaries: her immune system– devoid of neutrophils– will let almost anything in. When she is diagnosed with chronic Autoimmune Neutropenia, she is given a sheet with letters and numbers on it and no medicine. Lacking a cure, she eats these words instead.
Using moving image, prints, audio and large-scale printed banners, the viewer becomes immersed in a classroom-like space where the body is reduced to symbols and diagnostic terms. The artist has converted her body into a typeface, a moving and static alphabet which appears throughout the installation. The video installation features text by the artist tracing the theories and mythologies which inhabit her body.
